The Everglades is one of the world’s most extraordinary landscapes—the largest subtropical wetland in the United States. But for more than a century, it has also been a place caught between human ambition and nature’s resilience.

In La Mode Pratique Series, artist Harold Garcia V explores this ongoing tension through a unique blend of history, art, and research. Each work in the series highlights a factor that has shaped the Everglades from the late 1800s to the present, illustrating how politics, economics, and culture have left their mark on the ecosystem.

Harold draws inspiration from the fashion imagery and aesthetics of the Victorian era, a time when style often reflected deeper social challenges. Using delicate watercolor techniques alongside modern references, he creates artworks that connect the past with the present. The series invites viewers to see fashion as a metaphor for society’s vanity and excess, while recognizing how those patterns continue to influence the way we treat the environment.

Together, these works form an archive of visual storytelling—part history, part critique, part call to action. Viewed individually or as a whole, they encourage us to reflect on the complex relationship between people and the Everglades, and to ask what responsibility we bear for its future.
